The book is a series of lessons learnt by the author while practicing kienyeji chicken as a young boy, as a commercial farmer keeping layers under an intensive deep litter system at Embassy Village in Kisii County. The book also espouses experiences gained as a kienyeji chicken farmer keeping indigenous kienyeji chicken under the free range system on his farm at Kineni in
Borabu SubCounty in Nyamira county as well as experiences and anecdotes shared with fellow chicken farmers all over the country and the East African region especially from Uganda.
This book is of a very wide readership. It is basic enough to be a useful reading material for lay farmers intending to venture into chicken farming, practicing chicken farmers, field extension workers, as well as trainers and students in all institutions teaching poultry and chicken farming.
This book identifies the major problems and oversights in kienyeji chicken farming and seeks to warn you in advance; so that you can do whatever you can to protect your kienyeji chicken against them, detect them early enough, and plan to mitigate them or prevent them altogether.
The book emphasizes that as much as chicken farming. It is a profitable business where farmers have made money; also, there are those who have quickly jumped into the business without technical information, made some moderate investments, ran into heavy losses, and quit chicken farming, swearing never to try if anymore.
The book subdivides kienyeji chicken farming into fourteen chapters. Through the chapters, you will learn about the salient aspects of the agribusiness of chicken farming, including pests, parasites,s and diseases. In these chapters, technical botanical names of the pests and causal agents of the disease have been written in italics and bracketed. Only students of higher learning may need to memorize the names. Unless you have to, you do not need to cram those names. A glossary at the back explains in simple English any technical words inevitably used.
